Boston Brown Bread [Apr. 21st, 2008|03:14 pm]

A number of weeks ago Brown Bread, for some reason, came up in conversation and I was looked at, as per usual, like I was crazy for mentioning the odd idea of Bread that comes in a can.

Well from what I learned from this Wikipedia article, brown bread and baked beans are very much a New England "thing" so ti's not strange it you've never heard of it.

I personally always thought it was rather disgusting, but people seem to have a nostalgic attachment to it. I couldn't find any pictures of it out of the can, but the picture of the bread ON the can is pretty much what it looks like.

And for anyone who loves it and hasn't been able to find it anywhere...Amazon sells it

gross

I never heard of it either until one of Brent's coworkers convinced us to get it. Its actually not bad. Its kinda sweet. Imagine carrot cake without the rasins, carrots, and walnuts. We cut it in slices and put peanut butter on it.

Sounds and looks kinda gross to me. Is it moist? Or is it dry like fruit cake? I would imagine it may be twinkie like.

It's moist and kinda...crumbly. It's more twinkie like than anything. It's very very dense though. I dunno...I think it's an acquired taste.

Naw I don't think anything's wrong with you. Maybe I'll have to try it again. My intense dislike of baked beans might have colored my experience.

Looks a lot better than tamales in a can. What's up with those?

It's absolutely delicious. It's a brown bread, sweetish (sweetened with molasses, I think), sometimes with raisins in it. It's very similar to some English steamed puddings. I believe they steam it in the can and then seal the can.

When I was a kid my grandmother (from Wyoming but lived in Massachusetts for decades) used to bake her own beans Friday and make her own brown bread.

I got a friend to bring me (I live in London, England) two cans of B&M brown bread from his last trip to the US. What a treat!

I presume you went to the Prep as well, but quite a few years after I did (1967-1970)?

I suspect that the shipping of brown bread from the US to the UK would be quite ruinously expensive. Better that I visit every 6-12 months or so and stock up. I already stock up on:

1) Chunky peanut butter (Brotish PB is crap, tastes like they mix sand in it)
2) Irish Spring soap (we can't get it here)
3) Razor blades (much cheaper over there)

so brown bread is just another expense.

lol nope I actually went to Bishop Fenwick (1994-1998) but I'm born and raised in Peabody so I'm well acquainted with St. John's.
