laputa and valley of the wind are my favorite from Miyazaki.
actually, slayers is pretty fun too. the english translation is fairly rather silly, other than that... it's not bad
I've never seen Laputa, but I did see Valley Of The Wind and I really liked them. I still think Spritied Away is my favorite though...with Howl's right behind it.
I'll add Slayers to my queue and check it out.
Laputa is "Castle in the Sky". It is Miyazaki's 1st movie
Netflix is pretty good at predicting things you have a good shot at liking if you rate enough things. Browse the Instant shows sometime. I got into shows like Dexter & 30 Rock. The only goof anime I've watched via netflix is Dominion Tank Police. Which is very goofy... with catgirls... and tanks... and things being blown up by tanks.
I love me some 30 Rock. But I should get Dexter...I started downloading the first season when it first came on TV but then I stopped cause my connection blew
FLCL (Fooly-Cooly) Dead Leaves The Venture Bros. Morel Orel Boondocks
All animated awesomness, stuff I don't think you've seen that I think you should, right off the top of my head
Dead Leaves and FLCL are also some awesome ones, for sure:) kinda daunting in their weirdness tho..like a shot of tequila

I added FLCL and Dead Leaves. The venture Bros. I love and own the first two seasons on DVD. Morel Orel I never really got into and I 've never watched the Boondocks so I'll have to add that.
" MEcha Shiva, Mecha Shiva", " I dab, Do you dab "
Vampire Hunter D:Bloodlust(one of the greatest animated films around) Big O (a great series..yes, a big robot, but it's almost a mix of Batman and a little Gundam. interesting and philosophical with a little thriller in there) Outlaw Star (much like Cowboy Bebop..but funnier, and with surprising depth) Escaflowne (kind of a farfetched movie..like Miyazaki with more action) Ninja Scroll (the movie, not the series. very superhero-esque..lots of unique characters with amazing abilities) Gundam Wing (the best of the Gundam series in my opinion..political, sociological, philosophical..and some big-robot action but it's totally interesting) Trigun (fantastic. a little slow paced, but along the same lines as Cowboy Bebop in terms of a great blend of action, philosophy, reflective thought, comedy, and drama. a great concept and a few twists here and there..and some great messages. you'd be surprised at how little killing the main character actually does)

I wasn't a huge fan of Vampire Hunter D or Big O, not that there was any fault in the story...i just didn't like the animation.
Escaflowne I never saw the movie, but I watched the entire series in college with a group of friends over the course of a week. All 30-some-odd hours of it.
Trigun I watched the first 5 episodes and just didn't get into it. Maybe I'll give that another try.
I Think you will love "Read of Die" The movie not the series Also try "Spirited Away" , " My Friend Totoro" , And the Ghost in the Shell Season II Stand alone complex. Really good series IMHO And if they have it "Witch Hunter Robin " is very good .
Read or Die was one of the suggestions that Netflix came up with so I added that. I own Spritied Away cause it's my favorite but I've never seen my Neighbor Totoro so I added that. And I love Ghost in the Shell SAC. And I started watching Witch Hunter Robin on TV so that's a good idea. I'll add that so I can finish it.
You have to see Porko Rosso, over here in Oz one of our TV stations shows it once a year. It's amazing but if you get a Japanese DVD it should have the English dub but this is NOT the Disney dub. it was made for JAL for there pacific flights and I like it so much more than the Disney dub. Marko sounds a hell of a lot like Riker from Star Trek TNG and there is a bit of a mystery round it as there are no credits for any of the english voice actors. No one knows who voiced them?!
You have to see the Macross movie Do you Remember Love, for something animated in 1984 it's only starting to look a little dated now. It can basically sum up the whole Macross TV series an experience & it has the most beloved and well known song in all of anime. Though the brand new Macross F is totally amazing check out there community on LJ! 25 years and still going strong ^^
If you like cyberpunk you really cant go past the original Bubblegum Crisis. It pays a lot of homage to blade runner and still looks good today. I am showing my age here or what!
Now you have to go watch Royal Space Force: Wings of Honneamise. It's by gainax, you know the Evangelion people but it's not about big robots. It's about the 1st manned space trip on a different planet. Music is amazing as well as the animation. Lot of people find it a bit dry but give it a go as it is one of a kind and very underrated.
I like Ranma 1/2 as well but lets be honest, do you have the time to watch it all... this thing went for like over a decade!
Also another must is Project A-Ko, this started the anime parody movies. Just watch the 1st one the others are crap but god it's funny & piss takes everything from captian harlock, macross, yamato & lesbian schoolgirl love triangles. Yes it's has big robots but come one the ultimate 'robot' is a one pice swimsuit, got to love it lol.
Gundam.... Well Gundam is a lot of crap in a lot of ways. Talk about milking something for to long. The only real good ones in my book are Gundam Stardust Memory and the new Gundam 00. They are the most original out of the lot. I just never got into the others... I can feel the flames already... lol
Just a few from my list of likes, grab the popcorn
does netflix have BLEACH? (i dont watch it but my buddy shawn loves it.. so i'm sure its good)
My friend Shaqueem Shabaz Jones loves Bleach and talks about it incessantly. I'll add that.
I'm watching Bleach and it got rather annoying after episode 70 or something. I'm still hoping it gets better, but well it doesn't (Ep157). But the "first season" is really good.
I would recommend in the weird sector: FLCL 6EP, Samurai Champloo 26EP, Serial Experiments Lain 13EP and the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya 14EP
In the serious section, I'd recommend: Fullmetal Alchemist 51EP, Eureka Seven(I bit of Mecha) 52EP, Death Note 37EP
I'd recommend Satoshi Kon's Films:
Millennium Actress Paprika Paranoia Agent Tokyo Godfathers
They all do a great job of providing completely bizarre stories, yet enough sanity to create a coherent film.
I'd also say "Grave of the fireflies" - incredibly beautiful - just be prepared for one of the saddest stories ever told.
So you are looking for a goof anime. Well i could give you a list of this and that or why you should see so-called something. Instead I will just give you four smaller gems in the anime world. If you want to try a fun series than give Getbackers a try or Hunter X Hunter. If you like a deep story and good fight scenes than a must is Shura No Toki or Beserker if you like fighting and wayward gods.
You did good by signing up for Netfliks to get great Anime.
Miyazaki is tough to beat but so far you've gotten some great suggestions.
I really liked "Samurai 7" but it's more of an action/adventure series instead of the magical stories Miyzaki tells. I do want to try Samurai Champloo and I just got Blood the first disk.
Good luck and BTW, I love the new pic! Goregous!
I know you said you didn't really like the big splody robots but Evangelion: Neon Genesis is a really good animated series. You should check it out if you haven't seen it yet.
a series came out not too long ago which is kind of in the cowboy bebop typish anime. it's call Black Lagoon. I thought cowboy bebop was the best anime ever, and this series keeps up the excitement just like the bebop. |
